Chip Detector – Aerospace Parts Catalog

A chip detector, or magnetic chip detector, is an electronic instrument used throughout aircraft engine oil chip detection systems. They can provide warning of an imminent engine failure and therefore are very valuable, cost-saving parts. Chip detectors feature an array of small plugs that can be inserted in an engine oil filter, oil sump, or aircraft drivetrain gearbox. Over time, natural wear and tear will cause small metal chips to break loose from engine parts and circulate in the engine oil. The detector houses magnets built into an electric circuit. The magnetic forces attract the metallic particles and continue to do so until enough particles have been collected to bridge the air gap between the magnets, effectively closing the circuit. Once this occurs, an electronic signal will alert the operator to the presence of metal chips.

Chip detectors are typically positioned in the place of application via a self-closing valve through a threaded interface or bayonet. When the chip detector is disengaged from the valve for replacement or maintenance, the valve closes to prevent fluid loss from the system. Chip detectors are inspected during A-level checks and higher, and may also be subject to inspection over specified intervals.
